Here at CLIMB Works Keana Farms, our main mission is giving people a fun, safe, and educational way to experience a working commercial farm while preserving the land and having a positive economic impact on the local community. A great aspect of our zip line tour is the connection Keana Farms has to the local community, culture, and land. It is important to us that not only are you enjoying the great zips, but learning about the hundreds of acres of farm land surrounding the zip line and the history it holds.
The name “Keana” comes from the historical Ahupua’a of Keana. The Ahupua’a system is the way in which the ancient Hawaiians governed their lands. Differing Ahupua’a’s or “ancient land divisions” were what the island of Oahu was divided into before Captain Cook arrived in the late 1700’s and introduced landownership, imports and exports, along with disease and warfare. This is such an important piece of Hawaiian history that many people don’t know about. As guides, we share a brief rundown on the Ahupua’a system and how it has affected Hawaii to this day.
So why take the time to share the history behind Keana Farms and educate guests on the zipline tour? Well, when welcoming guests from all around the world, it is important that we give each person a taste of what our home means to us. Hawaii is such a unique, special place and there is so much to learn! What better way to share even the smallest bit of history to those who are also looking for some adventure? I can confidently say as a guide who shares these stories and bits of education each day, my own life has changed for the better! I have learned a new appreciation of those who have come before me and been more proactive on creating a space to pass it forward.
